Havana: A Subtropical Delirium

Slavery lasted longer in Cuba than anywhere else in the Americas. When I first visited the country in the early 1980s, it was still possible to meet Cubans who had known their African-born grandparents. Slavery was not abolished in Cuba until a Spanish royal decree on October 7, 1886.
